OFL Courses

Open & Flexible Learning Centre

The Open and Flexible Learning Centre (OFLC) of the SJPP was established In 2003.  The Paper-based modality was then introduced. The students for this modality would study at home using a study package with all the relevant information included, but were required to attend face-to-face workshops and practicals.  Five (5) courses were piloted. They were chosen primarily because of the demand for training in these areas:  Child Care and Nursery Management, Care of the Older Adult, Small Business Management, Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare, and Motor Vehicle Engineering.

In 2005 the Virtual Campus (Online Modality) was launched.  This was a historic educational achievement for Barbados and the SJPP in particular. The online modality was to further expand access to tertiary education and along with the traditional courses introduce non-traditional courses using this platform. The need to increase the number of places available at the institution has been recognized and twenty (20) courses are now accessible online.  All full-time and Distance and Continuing students have access to the blended learning. The SJPP continues to work diligently to have all its courses and programmes online in the future.

The OFLC was able to attract students from Guyana, St. Vincent, Dominica, Antigua, St. Lucia and Montserrat.  These students successfully completed online courses of study.  With this success, the institution will continue to aggressively market this new learning initiative in the region.

The OFLC will continue to create a framework for innovation in technical and vocational education.  Additionally, to meet the needs of the Barbadian public the OFLC will offer a network of high quality online and paperbased courses that promote lifelong learning.  These courses will be accessible to persons locally, regionally and internationally.

LOCATION

In close proximity to the main campus the Centre is located at Building #3 Pine Industrial Park, Wildey, St. Michael.

SERVICES OFFERED – ONLINE AND PAPER-BASED COURSES

Although these modalities require that students study partially on their own, all the courses are instructor lead, thus reassuring the students that their needs are being met.  Students will also attend face-to-face sessions at the institution for their entire practical and workshop sessions.

Online Modality

Students study on-line under the supervision of qualified Instructors, who experts in their field. The students are required to be computer literate and have access to a computer with internet connectivity.

The on-line studies are conducted using the Moodle On-line Course Tools. All students are given login credentials in order to access the system.

Paper-based Modality

Students use a study package that contains all of the materials needed for course.  This package along with the assistance of the tutors gives the student all the instructions and guidance needed to complete the course.

Blended Modality

A blended learning approach to instruction combines face-to-face classroom methods with online activities has resulted in an integrated learning experience for fulltime and some evening students. Blended courses combine face-to-face and online methods to varying degrees, depending on the individual instructor or division and what they want their students to have access to on the platform. At the moment ALL fulltime are involved in blended learning.
